The management of the future internet

A recent presentation by Ameer Al-Sadi, a PhD student, discusses the use of Software-Defined Networks as part of the future of the internet.

Abstract
The future internet will include a cloud of assisted living and smart applications that serve a user by providing a remote communication and management for specific resources. It will contain a numerous number of fixed and movable devices, sensors, and actuators. This requires very fast and dynamic communication, which is performed by a novel paradigm of network that contains a forwarding device with a central management, called Software-Define Network (SDN). SDN provides a faster, cheaper and more efficient network. In addition, it strongly supports Network Function Virtualization (NFV), which enables the quicker development of the network by using the software programs for executing the network functions instead of physical devices.
The aim of the research is to optimise the distribution and use of the SDN network resources through the following objectives: Develop the algorithm responsible for determining the initial number and the location of the elements of SDN network; The algorithm will extend to dynamically adapt this number and these locations according to the network changes; Model software platform to run SDN in wide Area Network and optimize its performance by applying the developed algorithms.
The implications of SDN will be pervasive because it is a powerful network paradigm, which carries the solutions for today's problems. The proposed algorithm will fill part of the gap of the SDN network management and enhance its performance. This work aims to be a helpful tool to design, test and manage any SDN network, starting from the campus network and extending to multiple campuses or the city.

MSc Computing Student work - University of Northampton

The dissertation is an important element of the MSc courses. The range and nature of the dissertations on MSc Computing  varies, below are some links to blog postings that I hope give a flavour some of the topics MSc students have  investigated:

One ex-student has turned his dissertation into a book.

From the MSc program as a whole,  where successful student end up working varies; but I would say lot work in areas that are internet intensive some examples include becoming a consultant in optimising websites to be more likely to be picked up search engines; another is a lecturer. At least one has gone to further study at Universities such as the University of Oxford.

There is a strong practical element to the courses. The emphasis of the whole MSc Computing programme is on developing both technical and Master’s level academic skills through practicing these skills, but after being taught the necessary underpinning theory.

Ecommerce solution for Track Day and Travel Insurance

Recent MSc Computing (Internet Technology and Security) dissertation work within the School of Science and Technology, University of Northampton, UK by  Hamad Raza.

Ecommerce solution for Track Day and Travel Insurance

      Abstract

Many of the insurance broker companies use third party products in order to provide quotation, to a client, for different insurance products. Many of these insurance brokers, using third parties hosted solution, commonly face issues including high maintenance cost, front end not easily customisable, unavailability of backend data directly and lengthy and costly process of system update.

The dissertation aims to design and develop a generic platform for track day insurance and travel insurance. The process starts with detailed problem domain investigation including comparable system investigation. A preferred development methodology is then selected, including system design and implementation techniques and tools, based on their advantages and disadvantages. Utilising preferred development methodology the platform is then built and evaluated.

The platform is integrated within an insurance broker company in order to fully demonstrate platform capability and in order to evaluate the platform entirely in hopes to fulfil the aim of the dissertation.
