The latest generation of aircraft integrates new Internet of Things(IoT) devices and enhanced information capability which can provide information at great speed and volume. Some of the information is already part of the flight data being generated and captured for flight operations. Some data relates to the health of the aircraft, systems and sub-systems that traditionally is for reliability engineering; and of great interest to fleet engineering and MROs. The massive e-enablement of aircraft subsystems heralds the age of Digital Aviation. Issues could be reported in real-time to airline operations and MRO stations to plan solutions and solve issues as soon as the aircraft lands. Effective exploitation of this information requires the necessary information communication and processing equipment, as well as the human skills to take advantage of the information. This presentation explains the implications of the Connected Aircraft to the airlines, airports, MRO and the aviation stakeholders.
Dr Ip-Shing Fan leads the research of information exploitation in the Cranfield IVHM Centre, part of the Cranfield Digital Aviation team. The Cranfield approach balances the viewpoints of the OEM, asset operators and maintenance providers. Fan focuses on creating business value from the information generated by e-enabled aircraft for the purpose of through life optimisation of asset operations, maintenance and spares logistics. The Cranfield toolset has been developed and tested with use cases from aerospace, maritime, vehicles, as well as land based engineering assets

- Alternatively, Morrison's Car Park (be aware of the parking time limit) and the Multi-Storey near the Theatre both are 5-10min work from the venue. Check on google maps before visiting.
Usual start time of 7:30pm arrive at 7pm.

advances in IoT security

The combination of an MSc Computing student and a Computing Lecturer again leads to publishing success. A paper on the security in Internet of Things (IoT) has recently been accepted for publication.

Abstract
The Internet-of-things (IoT) holds a lot of benefits to our lives by removing menial tasks and improving efficiency of everyday objects. You are trusting your personal data and device control to the manufactures and you may not be aware of how much risk your putting your privacy at by sending your data over the internet. The internet-of-things may not be as secure as you think when the devices used are constrained by a lot of variables which attackers can exploit to gain access to your data / device and anything they connected to and as the internet-of-things is all about connecting devices together one weak point can be all it takes to gain full access. In this paper we have a look at the current advances in IoT security and the most efficient methods to protect IoT devices.

Abstract:
Recent years have witnessed the boom of great technologies of smart devices transforming the entertainment industry, especially the traditional TV viewing experiences. In an effort to improve user engagement, many TV broadcasters are now investigating future generation content production and presentation using emerging technologies. In this paper, we introduce an ongoing work to enable immersive and interactive multi-device online TV experiences. Our project incorporates three essential developments on content authoring, device discovery, and cross-device media orchestration.

Internet of Things (IoT) applications are rapidly becoming the fastest growing industries within the technology sector. Devices are increasingly smaller, more power efficient, better connected than ever before but time to market is often slow due to the programming intricacies of complex hardware features. MicroPython, a new programming language for Microcontrollers, it aims to ease these problems by bringing the power and flexibility of the Python language down to just a few Kilobytes.

IoT Things Event 4th and 5th February 2017

This weekend sees the second University of Northampton Internet of Things (IoT) event; a three-day event that will focus on entrepreneurship and technology, with participants having the opportunity to start up their own enterprise.
Taking place at the University’s Park Campus on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February, with a follow up day on Saturday 4 March, the event will feature speakers from big industry names, such as Google Digital Garage, Catapult Transform Systems and Parallel Wireless.
The participants will take part in a series of workshops and will eventually be separated into ‘startup’ groups where they will be provided with basic technical equipment to get started setting up their own technology business based around the theme of transportation and logistics.
They will then be invited back in March to try to secure funding by presenting their ideas to a Dragon’s Den style panel, competing against the other start up teams.
Dr Triantafyllos Kanakis, from the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology at the University of Northampton, commented: “The rapid development of the Internet in recent years and the huge acceptance of technology by the consumer has fundamentally had an impact of all our lives.
“In previous years the time between major technological breakthroughs was between 10 and 15 years but now it is less than five years. Part of this is played by the Internet of Things, which due to its vast size, it is still impossible to predict its impact on the market.
“This event is a great way for students and budding entrepreneurs to learn first-hand about creating a startup business. The workshops and presentations will provide the knowledge they need to think about how to use technology to tackle projects, the art of business planning and how to reach customers. This is their opportunity to turn their ideas into reality.”

Abstract
The energy inefficiency of electronic devices is the major limiting factor for the adoption of these devices in Machine-to-Machine Communications (M2M)/Internet of Things (IoT). In order to address this, different emerging M2M communications standardisation organisations have proposed perceived energy efficient protocols. The essence of this paper is to discuss the energy implications of different M2M communication standards on the lifespan of the electronic devices that are to be used for the M2M communications.

Abstract


You are warmly invited to attend a free evening lecture at the University’s Polhill Campus on Tuesday 13 May 2014.
“Hacking the Internet of Things” will be the subject of the talk by Geraint Williams, Information Risk Consultant and Trainer, IT Governance Ltd., and Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of Bedfordshire.
The Internet of Things describes a paradigm of how electronic devices including everyday items are now interconnected by various media to each other locally and across the Internet. This allows them to exchange information and to interact with us in order to make life easy. You can now control the heating in your home from a smart phone app or monitor the movement of hundreds of buoys free floating in ocean currents from anywhere in the world.
The Internet of Things has great potential for aiding us. However the potential for malicious activities is just as great. This talk discusses the Internet of Things and its potential. This will be followed by discussions and demonstrations of how the Internet of Things can be hacked to reveal details of our interactions or to take control of the environment around us.
Geraint Williams is an Information Risk Consultant and Trainer for IT Governance Ltd. and an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of Bedfordshire. Geraint is a knowledgeable and experienced Information Security consultant with experience including vulnerability testing, digital forensics, secure networking, and wireless security issues. Geraint has a strong technical knowledge of security and IT infrastructure including high performance computing. Geraint has a number of certifications in security and digital forensics including CISSP, CISA, CEH and CHFI.
